Once you go black, he'll offer you a steak dinner!

I was cleaning up my email inbox today and I came across a registration for a local website here in Chicago that goes around and takes pictures of people while they are out and about.  For my birthday, last month, me and my girls hit Betty's Blue Star Lounge on Grand and Ashland.  Betty's is one of my favorite places to just go and chill.  It's the perfect laid back atmosphere to people watch.  Granted that I was dressed a bit snazzy for this place, I knew if I went, I'd have a great time.

A photographer walked up to me and introduced herself as blah blah blah from the local Wassup Magazine and she wanted to take my picture.  I quickly grabbed the little drunken man that you will see in the middle and my bestie Anissa, I'm not a complete spot light attention seeker.  I signed up on the website to check out the pictures, but apparently they are really bad at updating.  It was a week after my birthday and all I saw were Halloween pictures.  So today as I am cleaning out my inbox, I clicked the link to see if the picture had been posted.  And VOILA!  It finally was and only a month later!

The guy in the middle, just some random middle aged man who handed me a business card and offered to take me out for a steak dinner.  Really?  Who does that?  He complimented me the entire night and offered to buy me drinks.  While I declined the drinks, I entertained his conversation for a bit.  He wouldn't stop talking about how pretty I was, which was just completely overbearing and quite frankly a bit cheesy.  He didn't stop talking until I put my coat on, in which he felt the need to help.  Sweet middle aged man, haha thank you sir.

Here's the picture of the outfit from head to toe.  I normally don't dress in all black like this, but it's totally do-able if you mix up textures, which is what I did.  SN, I read Tiffany's discussion on shapewear and I'd like to point out that I am wearing spanx under my clothes. Yes, spanx and tights! How warm was I?

The sweater is from J.C. Penny, I bought it a few years ago.
The vest and the tights are from Target
The pencil skirt is from Ashley Stewart
Black Patent Leather Peep Toe Slingbacks from payless
Patent Leather belt from Torrid
Silver bangles from Forever 21
I had one a ring that isn't visible in this pic, but it's from Dots (see below)

I do realize that I don't post many outfits, but I don't go out that much. :o(   If you guys care to see what I lounge around in the house in, I'd be happy to share!  I feel like instead of outfit of the day or week, I need to do outfit of the month? Hmm, maybe.

I'm Ready For My Close-Up; Boutique Larrieux!

Moving to Chicago has really helped my so-called "modeling" career.   I won't lie.  I tend to lose focus, which is something I've been working on.  I suck at follow-up, something else I am also working on.  Hard work and determination do pay off!  I've landed a GREAT OPPORTUNITY!  I said on my facebook status last week that I had some good news in regards to modeling, but I was waiting to share it because I wanted to make sure it was concrete.  Welp, today, while I was knocked out due to a Five Guys burger induced coma, I missed a call from the owner of Boutique Larrieux.  Lydia Hamilton, the owner of the store, left really great things on my voicemail.  I checked my email shortly:
    Hi Nichole,
Great news, Boutique Larrieux would love to have you as one of three models to be featured in our Spring/Summer photo shoot!

That first line of the email was all I needed to read!  After some heart breaking news yesterday, this totally made me feel a bit better.  I totally snagged a modeling gig! YES!

Boutique Larrieux, slated to open their doors in March 2010, will offer an extensive selection of contemporary designer apparel and accessories.  They will also offer everything they carry in the store, online.  Which is awesome for those who don't live in the immediate area, i.e., me!

The photoshoot is scheduled for the 20th of next month in Milwaukee.  It will begin at 7am! OH EM GEE! haha I do not think that I have been up that early on a Saturday in a very long time!  Hopefully I will be able to get some "behind the scenes" pics to post up for you guys when that day comes.  In the meantime, you can follow Boutique Larrieux on twitter http://twitter.com/btqlarrieux

Star Quality; Plus Model Arden P

I ran across Nedra Phillips on ModelMayhem (the site that jump started my modeling and networking).  I browsed through her pictures and I thought, "Wow, this girls got chops!"  Not only is she a brick house, but the camera loves her.  When I found out that she's only 10 months into her modeling career I was in awe.  You can usually tell newbies from the more experience models; the posing is usually boring and their "model face" is repetitive.  But Nedra, also know as Arden P, shows definite star quality.  As soon as I saw her, I knew that I wanted to interview her and find out a little more about this "Urbclastic" model.

Name: Nedra Phillips AKA Arden P
    Age: 28
    Size:16-20
    Location: Atlanta

When did you decide to get into modeling?
Believe it or not I started 10 months ago my best friend pushed me to just try it and now here I am.

The styling in your modeling pictures range from edgy and sexy to sweet and flirty.  Do you have any fashion tips for our readers?
I just believe in dressing how I feel. I love bright colors and mixing up different styles. You have to dress to your body type. It is very important to know what your body type is. Just because they make it in our size doesn’t mean it was you have to put it on...Lol. Being a Real Size Women we have to be a little more creative.

Is there a designer that you would love to model for if size were not an issue?

Betsey Johnson, she is so edgy and flirty I LOVE IT!

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is called Urbclastic…lol just kidding I just made that up. I’m a mixture of Urban Classic and Jazzy.

As we all know, a plus model is not technically a plus size woman.  So in the plus modeling industry, how do you market yourself?

Simple, I’m a model no plus in it because if I’m a plus model then there must be a negative model? Have you seen them?  I mainly focus on just being me a real woman with confidence that don’t mind sharing.

I thank you for your time for this short interview.  Please finish this sentence:
"I absolutely cannot live without MY SHOES!! I know so sad. lol  Thank you for your interest in me!

Crossing State Lines For An Interview

Just a quick update in regards to the job search.  I usually don't tell my friends when I have an interview, cause I've had a couple since I've been out here and nothing as of yet has happened.  I'm too afraid to jinx myself!  BUT, after sending out cover letters and resumes for managerial positions in retail *slight eye roll* all day on Wednesday, I did get one response back that night!  As of Saturday I will be driving an hour north to WISCONSIN to attend the first round of interviews for Stride Rite, a childrens shoe store.  Stride Rite is opening up a store at an outlet mall in Gurnee, IL which is approximately 45 minutes north of me.  It's much further than I wanted to work, but as I discussed with the boyfriend, I can't complain about NOT having a job if I'm not trying to get one.  Surely if I was back in Michigan, that 45 minute drive would be nothing.  I did it on almost a regular when I worked at Target and camped out in Detroit at the ex's house.  So I am going to suck it up and go!  Of course I have to make it through the first rounds of interviews, that's no problem.  I usually interview quite well.  I will see what they are offering and if that is enough to compensate for an hour and a half drive (that's minus traffic) 5 times a week.  Ok Universe.  I am giving you all my positive energy!  My homework for tomorrow?  Research the company and research kids shoe trends. :)  Simple, right?

P.S., I'm going to go check out Thread Lounge tomorrow.  I want to see what type of people work in the store now.  Hmm, my own little P.I.  I hope to take pics if at all possible.  Also, I know I haven't posted an OOTW or OOTD and I have a perfectly good explanation for that.  I have only left the house to go grab groceries, take out the trash and check the mail.  Not so glam, right?  Even though I must pay my rent tomorrow, roof over head before fashion right? :-P Maybe I will do a bit of window shopping and snap pictures of what I find?

    Time to go dream!

Guys Spill It; What HE Wants For Valentines Day!

This is part 2 of 4 of my Valentine's Day Series.  I hope you will find this series helpful.  I have to say that I believe in showing love and appreciation 365!  I personally do not think that one day out of the year is enough to show your better half that you love and adore them.  I think this should be done on a regular basis. Enjoy!

I'm sure many women will want to stone me after I say this, but contrary to popular belief, Valentine's Day is not all about US! *ducksValentine's Day is, ideally, for both the man and the woman.  We self absorbed women tend to forget about the men in our lives.  You know, the ones who squish the spider in the bathroom, takes care of you when you're sick, holds your purse while you try on clothes for hours?  Yeah, those guys, they can be pretty great.  Your boyfriend/husband is your loving companion, friend and partner in life; and sometimes they are even the father of your children.  Your relationship isn't perfect, not by a long shot.  Who would expect it to be?  So why is it that we tend to forget about the guy that willingly wakes up next to you knowing that you have morning breath and your hair all over the place, but he still finds you to be the most attractive woman in his world?

C'mon ladies, let's treat the guys in our life properly.  They too like gifts on Valentine's Day!  I know people say that men are hard to shop for, but if you pay close attention, he's giving you clues.  And I'm not talking about those yellow post-it's that are found on bathroom mirrors and refrigerator doors.  Guys often feel the pressure to buy, buy, buy and the entire day is centered around you, his adoring girlfriend/wife.  So why not surprise him with a token of your appreciation on Valentine's Day?  It's not up to the guy to keep the fire going in a relationship.  It's a combined effort!  And sorry to say my fellow divas, but buying sexy lingerie and saying it's "for him" doesn't count either, nor will it last very long.

Don't know where to start for gift giving?  Of course, NikStar has some ideas for you!  Check them out below:

    1. Fossil Analog Black Dial Watch, $95 http://www.fossil.com
    2. Polysueded Sport Coat by Alfani, $109.99 http://www.macys.com
    3. BLV by Bvlgari, $38.10; Armani Code by Giorgio Armani, $28.99 http://www.overstock.com
    4. "Life Comes At You Fast" by Crooked Monkey, $29.00 http://www.bluefly.com
    5. Pentax Optio I-10, $300 http://www.amazon.com
    6. Diesel time Zone Watch, $300 http://www.nordstroms.com

Of course these are all just ideas.  Guys like it when we are romantic too.  You don't even honestly have to spend a dime to make him happy.  If you have a sentimental sweetheart, you could make a photo collage book.  If food is the way to your mans heart, how about cooking dinner together?  Better yet, some restaurants offer cooking lessons, you could try one of those.  For movie buffs, instead of hitting an overpriced movie theatre and paying for popcorn, candy and soda with your first born, you could perhaps make a blockbuster, redbox or netflix night!  Rent old flicks, maybe even find the movie that you first watched together and rekindle that spark, relive your first kiss.  For the guy that likes to pampered just as much as his lady sidekick, give him a great warm oil massage and remind him why he's with you.

As a tribute to the guys, I wanted to pick their brains slightly.  I asked a few random guy friends from my FB friends list their thoughts on Valentine's Day.  They were all asked the same questions, but check out different their responses are!

What would you like for Valentines Day?
I think Valentines day gifts are for the lady,  I think the perfect gift would be for her to buy a new sexy outfit, get her hair done, new make-up style, some lace lingerie, and suprise me with a stunning new look that has my mouth on the floor, and wanting to spend double on her at a fancy restaurant.
Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
I definitely think it's important.  Unless your single of course, then it sucks. :( Lucky for me, I have a special lady.  Without Valentines day many couples would probably never get romantic, NOT ME, but many.  SO, without romance, the relationship becomes boring as Hell. Like a dance floor with no DJ.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
Hmmmm.  Coming home after an evening of fancy food, fancy outfits and fancy drinks.  Lighting a couple candles and feeling the energy. ;)

What would you like for Valentines Day?

Simply for my woman to be happy, that is enough for me.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?

It is important to celebrate it because if taking one day out of the year will make your woman feel that much more special then that is important. Because she is important. The real question is why only one day? You should treat everyday like it is Valentine's Day with the one you love.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?

I'm not a dreamer so this is kinda tough. I guess the perfect ending would be knowing you did enough that you will still have a valentine the day after lol.

What would you like for Valentines Day?

What I would like to do for valentines day is take my fiance out to a nice dinner and a movie. Keep it real simple. I'll surprise her with a gift she would never expect.  I know how much she hates surprises so I'm going to do it anyway.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?

I think its very important to celebrate v-day because I'm the type of person I like to show how much love i have for her. I show it everyday but I think just like my anniversary, this day is almost as important.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?

The perfect way to end our valentines night would be spending it at the W hotel and just making hot, sexy, sweaty sex all night and all morning.

What would you like for Valentines Day?
As a gift... There's is NOTHING I would like more than maybe a nice surprise... I'm the type of man that does sweet/romantic things all year long... it would be nice to have it reciprocated! Not the standard dinner/movie/sex that society expects.. but something outside the box!

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
I say NO... I don't mean don't acknowledge it... but it's not a holiday I choose to celebrate like an anniversary or birthday! I feel that society has put WAAAYYY too much pressure on us MEN to do something special on this one particular day! I love my girlfriend 24/7 365 (25/7 during daylight savings time & 366 on leap year LOL)! I think there is too much emphasis on romance! What I mean by that is.. what is sooooo different about me taking you out to a nice restaurant this weekend than on Valentines Day weekend??? NOTHING (in my eyes)!! Don't get me wrong.. My girlfriend will get a special gift this year... but that's a different story.. in a nutshell.. what I'm saying is, let's love each other all year long, and not just 1 day during the shortest month of the year... which just happens to be Black history month ( we caint never have stuff to ourself! LOL)

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
The perfect ending for me on MY Valentines Day would be my girl and I snuggled up together (with a nice cold glass of Minute Maid Fruit Punch) after a good... no.. GREAT love making session... but that's just me!

What would you like for Valentines Day?
My girlfriend dressed up as Princess Leia.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
No, because when your in love everyday is Valentines day.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
Risking certain death, I would rescue my princess from the nearest Death Star. After we make our daring escape, I would whisk her away to her private quarters on the Rebel Base were we would play with my lightsaber and experiment with the Force until the break of dawn.

What would you like for Valentines Day?
A day in the city with someone special, this year it’s on a Sunday, so it has to be an all day event. It’s easier for a man to commit, since football season will be over by this point.  There is a lot to do in Chicago, so its really up to myself and whomever I’m lucky enough to be spending the day with.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
I don’t really consider it a Hallmark Holiday as much as some others, but it’s only important if you think it’s important. Guys can go either way, we care about it if we have someone to spend it with, or if there is a lady we want to talk to; Valentine’s Day is perfect if your game is right. Haha.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
Really now? Some Hot-Butt-Naked Sex…What else is there?

What would you like for Valentines Day?
I would like a massage package, and a nice dinner and movie package. If that is too expensive, do an all-inclusive type deal like a room at a hotel, do the massage yourself and just relax and enjoy yourselves.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
I think it is important to celebrate Valentine's Day if it has been established that it means something to both people in the relationship. I know some guys and some girls who don't really care about it. So only if it means something to your significant other (and you).

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
My perfect ending is what we decide to do together, be it lay in bed and watch tv, sitting in the tub drinking champagne, or just other adult activities. As long as we are both happy, then it's a great ending.

What would you like for Valentine's Day?
As a chronic bachelor, I can only ask for so much as far as Valentine's day goes. I would love to have a wonderful Valentine's date. Not just any date, but the perfect date-- a date that would be the springboard to a beautiful and inevitable relationship. If I had a relationship or a special someone, I'd like it if on Valentine's Day she wasn't afraid to step outside her comfort zone and do something she knows I would love. Whether it be a certain hairstyle, an outfit, or an activity, I would appreciate something new and outside the box.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
Valentine's Day, I scoff at even the thought of the holiday. It wasn't always like that. There was a time Valentine's Day meant so much more, and I'm sure that time will come again someday. I do see and understand the significance of Valentine's Day. Although we should celebrate the love we have for that special someone every day of the year, it is one of those special occasions that is kind of like an exclamation to that love.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
Depending on the girl, depending on the day, and depending on the night, the perfect end could be any number of things--a sweet kiss goodnight, a Valentine's proposal, falling asleep in each other's arms, or not falling asleep at all *wink*. For me, it's not what we do, it's who I'm with.

What would you like for Valentines Day?
I would honestly love a home-cooked meal from a beautiful woman who loves to give as much as she loves to receive. I'm talking a meal from scratch too. Something that she actually put THOUGHT into, because honestly many women don't cook anymore. Not for real. LoL This woman would WANT to prepare this meal and give just because she knows that she'd get that and more in return.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
Honestly, Valentine's Day could be every weekend, or every month or every vacation or everytime you kiss your love goodbye in the morning before going to work. Its not that important to celebrate it, but it IS important to celebrate your loved one more frequently than one day ;-)

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?

Bared souls, exhausted bodies, her head laying in my lap while I rub her head and we talk, laugh, joke, smile and kiss the night away.

What do you want for Valentines Day?
For Valentine's Day, I just want some peace and quiet. Sex and a message are a plus, but the energy should be the opposite of a stressful work day. If you're looking for a great gift, buy a DVD of the best movie we both watched together and / or a surprise in line with our conversations. Going to a show, for instance, is awesome.

Although Valentines is a hallmark holiday, do you feel that it is important to celebrate it? Why or why not?
It's important because humans need benchmarks to remember when things happen. While it sounds tacky on the surface because everyday should be a day of love, in the grand scheme of things, humans don't often remember to do it and exert themselves in that fashion.

What would be the perfect ending to your Valentines night?
Believe it or not, peace and quiet. I know I'm harping on that theme, but for men, peace takes work, so when it happens, it's wonderful.

Thank you too all the guys for sharing their thoughts on Valentines Day.

What's a Single Girl To Do On Valentine's Day?

This is part 1 of 4 of my Valentine's Day Series.  I hope you will find this series helpful.  I have to say that I believe in showing love and appreciation 365!  I personally do not think that one day out of the year is enough to show your better half that you love and adore them.  I think this should be done on a regular basis. Enjoy!

There's a lot to be said for being a single girl.  The toilet seat is always down.  There are no arguments about taking out the trash.  When you go out on Friday night with your girlfriends, it's like being a kid in a candy store, you have a wide array of yummy guys to chose from.  The television remote is all yours.  Oh, and not to mention, totally consuming the entire bed, hogging the covers and only worrying about putting up with your own gas.

Once a year, after you've already maxed out your credit cards for the Christmas holiday season, February 14th rolls around quicker than they are able to get the clearance seasonal items out of the store.  Valentine's Day might be a dreaded and gloomy day if you happen to be single.  Commercials streaming advertising the finest chocolates, cheesy perfume ads and images of happy couples romping around in the bed or holding hands.  Not to mention, your BFF is in a new relationship and every time she mentions something about her "sweetie" you feel yourself getting nauseous and suddenly you get the urge to spew all over her Michael Kors pumps.  You probably feel left out of the love and affection shared by couples on this hall mark holiday.

I honestly believe that love is not about a particular day, or about cards, flowers, or even being in a relationship.  For the last two years, I was as single as a dollar bill whenever cupid's favorite holiday rolled around.  The illusion that coupled people are happy and well-loved can feed feelings of loneliness or isolation for people who aren’t with someone, and wish they were.  Not saying that I don't believe in love and passion, I do consider myself to be a hopeless romantic.  But, I don't see it as a reason to scour every guy in your little black book and look for a date.  Even if you do not currently have a significant other, there are friends and family who love and care for you.  Try to maintain a positive state of mind and an optimistic attitude to survive being single this Valentine's Day.

So, what is a girl to do when he or she is feeling the chilling blues of being single instead of embracing the fiery desire of love?  I've got a couple of ideas.

Treat Yourself!  You don't need a guy to buy yourself a fresh bouqet of flowers or fancy chocolate covered strawberries.  Matter of fact, skip the cliche chocolate box and strawberries and get yourself some Pink Vanilla Buttercream Cupcakes ($28.00) from Godiva. Who could resist moist, rich, chocolately cupcakes.  OK, I'm practically licking the screen thinking about 'em!

Grab your single gal pals and go on a shopping spree!  Buy yourself a fabulous pair of shoes and a "freak em" dress and get ready to paint the town pink, red, black, HELL, any color of your choice! It's your night!  It might still be winter, but I'm sure you can find a dress to heat up your night.  Try the figure hugging Ruched Blocking Bandeau Dress (£55.00 UK sizes from 6-20) from ASOS.  The ruched texture will discreetly hide any problem areas while showing off those shapely curves.

Try something new!  Why not challenge yourself and try something new?  If you haven't experienced the ways in which sushi will please your pallette, why not try out the the place in your neighborhood that you have been dying to try?  Maybe you have star quality and you secretly admire the people on American Idol.  Be brave, be bold and hit up the karaoke bar with your friends.  Have you always wanted to try that new Yoga class that all your friends are raving about?  Megan Garcia shows you how a woman with curves can participate in yoga too.

Some other things that you can do to get ride of those Valentine's Day blues:

    • Go to a day spa for “the works”
    • Plan an intimate dinner for 3 or 4
    • Go ice-skating or to the movies with a fun friend
    • Go out to dinner and a movie with a group of other singles
    • Focus on what you enjoy and make a conscious decision about how to mark the day
    • Un-Valentine's Day parties are very popular and can be a lot of silly fun. You can attend one or throw one of your own.

If you are single, do you have plans?  What would you suggest for those that are feeling less than stellar about this lovers holiday?

Rub Shoulders with Qristyl Frazier at Queens Fashion Week

Listen up fashionistas!  Queens Fashion Week will be here sooner than you know it!  February 11th-13th local Queens designers will launch their 2010 Fall trends and goodies.  Qristyl Frazier, of Project Runway, will be one of the designers giving you a peek into what is to come.

I have adored Qristyl Frazier since seeing her on Season 6 of Project Runway.  Qristyl recieved tons of criticism while on PR, but I still found myself a fan of her work.  Her sexy plus size line last year confirmed for me that she can make things to flatter a fuller figure and it can still be tasteful and sexy.  I can't quite afford to pick up the dress of hers that I want.  I've been unemployed for a while now and to purchase one her dresses would have me eating ramen noodles for weeks on end.  I think I actually would be totally ok with that as long as I look fabulous! *smirk*

    Rouched Wrap Dress $325

    Shimmering Sexy $225

    Wild and Sexy $325

I cannot wait to see what Qristyl is going to come up with next!  Unfortunately I won't be able to visit NY for the Queens Fashion Week, but if anyone attends, please be sure to tell me what you see!

Am I Too Fat For This Job?

As I mentioned before, I am unfortunately, unemployed. *sigh*  To apply for jobs is a job itself!  I've been on my "grind" looking for employment.  I realize that in my field, retail management, that after the holiday season most businesses are busy cutting hours and not hiring.  It isn't until after the fiscal year, usually in February, for most retail employers that they look to hire again.  Even that's a prayerful situation cause in retail, business usually picks up closer to Easter. Eh.

During my tedious searching, sending out resumes and countless follow-up emails, I am still coming up with nothing.  I remain hopeful.  I can't lie, it's the most frustrating thing possible knowing that the economy is going to hell and I hear people constantly complaining, "I don't want to go to work today." or "I hate my job."  My response, just be very grateful that you are currently employed because 10% of Americans are currently unemployed.  Illinois alone has an unemployment rate of  11.1% as of December 2009 compared to the 15.4% of unemployed citizens in Detroit.  PHEW!  That's huge.

I digress.  I search high and low, on every job site and craigslist is usually first on my list, seeing as how local businesses sometimes advertise job openings on CL.  I always hit the retail jobs first, although, I'm looking to get out of retail management eventually just because I'd love to know how it feels to take a Christmas vacation.  It's hard.  I've applied for admininistrative positions, banks, hospitals and I always come back to good ol' retail. It's where my skills are the strongest and I am more than sure that I can do any position and excel.

So I came across this ad for an "Energetic,Fun ,Sales Management Position" for the Thread Lounge in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.  The Thread Lounge is based in San Fransisco but has a permanent store in Chicago.  They sell samples from Alice + Olivia, Mint by Jody Arnold, Nougat of London and a host of many other fabulous designers.   Their list of job requirements?  Psh, that's cake!

    • 8 years professional retail experience - CHECK!
    • Excellent organization skills - CHECK!
    • Exceptional people skills - CHECK!
    • Outstanding customer service skills - CHECK!
    • Familiar with Excel, Word and Internet- CHECK!

At this point, I'm already opening up a new email to create a cover letter and send in my resume, until I get to the bottom "send resume along with photo to".  A photo?!  For a retail position?  It's not completely unusual to see a job asking for a photo for consideration for employment.  Bars and night clubs do this all the time.  I can't say that I've ever seen a retail store, even a boutique that carries high designer labels.  After letting it sink in, I was reminded of the Abercrombie & Fitch lawsuit for discrimination back in 2004.  I understand that "beauty" is usually represented by waif, blond, blue-eyed, leggy figures and most certainly everyone does not agree with V Magazine's the Size Issue in which beauty comes in all sizes.  With that said, I sat for about 10 minutes before I decided to go ahead and take the first step in applying for this position.

Geez, this instantly made me feel quite self conscious.  I don't question whether I am attractive, but I do question whether a high end boutique such as the Thread Lounge would hire a voluptuous, fashionable, curvy woman.  I should not feel defeated before I ever send my resume for a job; I sent it nonetheless.  My cover letter was amazing, my resume is pretty top notch, and this is the photo that I decided to send along with it.

Granted, I am not familiar with every designer that Thread Lounge carries, I am more than qualified for the job and I'm a fast learner.  I have access to the internet so that I can continously research global fashion trends.  I try to think positive about every resume that I send out there, tossing all my positivity to the universe, but I honestly believe that I won't be hearing anything back in regards to this position.  Has anyone else ever had this occur to them?  Have you or anyone else experienced size discrimination in the work place?  I'd like to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Abby Z to Launch her Spring 2010 Collection on HSN

Designer Abby Z felt like there was a definite need for curvy girl fashion after, for many years, styling "skinnies" in the industry.  Being a curvy girl herself, Abby Z launched her plus size clothing line in 2004.  She has designed for beauties like Mo'Nique, Queen Latifah, Marcia Gay Harden and Rosario Dawson.  Now Abby Z will be launching her Spring 2010 collection on February 9th exclusively with HSN.  You can read more about Abby Z and her collection and motto on how to be sexy at any size by clicking here to read her interview with The StyleList.

Below are a couple of my favorites from Abby Z.

Cowl Neck Empire Dress with Inset

Denim Bolero Jacket with Satin Lining

My good friend Sara Alloy was lucky enough to model some of Abby Z's designs for the look book.  I had to throw her in there, she's gawgus!

    Put yo' HOOD up!

(see below for where to buy these hoodies)

As I walked to Dominicks last night to drop off the two movies I rented from Red Box (Julie & Julia and Inglourious Basterds, both of which by the way, are on my list of movies to own) I was shocked by the drop in temperature. *sigh*  I've been a midwest girl my entire life and I know I shouldn't get too excited when it's 45 degrees in the middle of January and 20 degrees the very next day.  I mean really, it's my own fault for thinking that possibly spring was on it's way.  The only good thing about walking to the store in the cold is that I love how wonderfully rosey it makes my cheeks, a natural blush.  I don't like, however, how the wind whipped snow flakes all in my face.  Damn you Windy! (Chicago)  During the walk, I was inspired for this next posting...HOODIES!  And I ain't talking about your hanes her way fleece hoodies, which are perfectly fine if that is what you like, but me, I need some edge to my potential hoodies.  I love them probably just about as much as I love my graphic tees.  I guess you could say I like to be comfortable and warm.  Now, I'm a guys kind of girl...meaning that while I can dress up cutesy and rock the heels, I can always rock a relaxed "urban" look with a great hoodie and a pair of skinny's.

I do have a favorite hoodie that I wear.  I kinda stole it from my ex, not because I wanted to be reminded of him, but because I picked it out.  We were roaming around in Pac Sun and while shopping, anything that is glittery, sparkling, pink or blue always catches my eye.  Well, naturally the hoodie does not bling and is certainly not pink because it's a mens hoodie.  SN, mens tees, sneakers and hoodies are probably the only MALE pieces of clothing I will spend my money on.  Mens jeans do no justice to these hips of mines.

With that said, I do purchase mens hoodies, cause they are pretty nice to me.  I buy them in a L, cause I like them to fit me snugly, hey, can't hide those curves completely!  I've been wandering around online, per usual and I wanted to share with you some of the fantastic hoodies I found!

    $45.00 - Hot Topic

    $69.50 - Pac Sun
